Hello! My name is Mateo Olvera-Sandoval. I am originally from the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. My mother dedicated her life to the community as a social worker and an educator, and my father emigrated to the U.S. from Mexico and worked as a truck driver. As the first in my family to pursue a legal education, I know how difficult it can be to apply to law school without someone to guide you along. Thankfully, through my experience at various law schools and strong efforts networking, I was able to get the support I needed to succeed in the process. I have earned over half a million dollars in scholarships including a full-ride to the University of Iowa’s Law School.
Through the process, I learned a few valuable lessons, not least of which being: the legal field is exclusive. The legal field likes to maintain its exclusivity not only through the various plateau’s one must reach before becoming an attorney (LSAT, 3 years of law school and the bar exam), but also by gatekeeping certain information about the industry from laypeople. People who have attorneys in their network are at an advantage when it comes time to apply to law schools, which can affect one’s career trajectories. My goal is to help those similar to my background achieve a better understanding of the legal field and bridge some of the disadvantages they may face.
